Water is such a fascinating topic, and it is actually the most important substance on Earth for life aside from oxygen/air.

There is a lot of information available on the web, and quite a bit of misleading information. Before trying to figure out how to structure water, how to create "living water" or "4th phase water", one understand the basics. Then it is much more difficult to be fooled by marketing scams and "formulas" that are more based on imagination than science.

The article: Water, the Universal Solvent, is a great place to start, as it covers the different types of water people use for drinking purposes... from distilled water, to mineral water to antioxidant water to oxygenated water.

Hí Jason,
Having left my old distiller behind in my last move, I'm trying to find a new good source of purified water.
In your article "Water: The Universal Solvent ~ The Ways of Drinking Water" you have a picture of a "Non Electric Water Distiller (NOT steam distiller)". Are there distillers that aren't steam distillers? How does one obtain quality distilled water? You also mention that reverse osmosis requires prior ozonation and UV treatment. However most units I see online don't provide those treatments prior to the reverse osmosis. What should one look for if opting for reverse osmosis? The only source of purified water for sale that I know of is bottled water. You write "Most major cities have water stores that offer very affordable purified water"- do you mean bottled water? And if so, aren't you afraid of plastic leeching into the water?
Thanks and Happy New Year!
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca:

Great questions!

Steam distilling water is the best way, but it is not energy efficient. You'd have to purchase about five of the single gallon distillers, or invest in expensive equipment. It takes about four hours per gallon with the popular one gallon steam distillers.

Solar distillers are energy efficient, and work off of the principle of condensation. However, ozonation would have to be used afterwards. Since the water is not boiled, it is not guaranteed to be sterile. The distilled water will ***most likely be*** sterile.

You can purchase BPA free three or five gallon water bottles to use, if purchasing water from a water store. When I test our water, there is no measurable contaminants, although of course it is possible that there may be some other plastic byproduct deposited in the water in the parts per billion or trillion.

For a home RO system, you'd have to get an expert to install what is called a venturi ozone system... inline before the RO. I believe that there are whole house systems that include UV/ozonation. I have not researched them enough to offer a real educated opinion.

If you choose to use purified water in refillable BPA free plastic bottles, you can always ozonate the water before using it. Ozone will very quickly neutralize any petro-chemical contamination.

There is yet another option: Use glass bottles to store purified water. I know that there are five gallon ones out there, and I would bet that there are three gallon glass bottles available as well. Of course, plastic is much easier to handle then glass!

Sadly, the perfect solutions are usually very expensive.

Thanks a lot! I just contacted our local water treatment plant. They say that the water in our neighborhood is groundwater that has been slightly chlorinated. In other neighborhoods they say the water is from rivers or lakes and they do use ozonation. Could it mean that groundwater is somewhat cleaner? They suggest a simple charcoal filter, but there are also some affordable counter top RO systems for sale. I'm reluctant to start buying water in plastic bottles given all the plastic that is clogging up our oceans. A solar distiller would be best if only I could find one, and not much sun here this time of year!....

...I personally don't trust regular ground water coming from the average water table... BUT the quality really has a lot to do with environmental factors. If it is a pristine environment without risk factors, then it may be OK.

Understood. I doubt the ground here is pristine as we're near a big city and an airport!

There are 7 stage RO systems for sale online with UV filters, but I can't find one that includes ozonation.

If the system does what it's supposed to do, would you still not recommend using it without prior ozonation?

Alternatively there are ozonators for sale on amazon too but then I don't know how that water would be fed into the RO system as it is connected to the tap water!...

Ozonation is wonderful, but not absolutely necessary.

What ozonation CAN do is extend the life of the RO membrane by breaking down volatile petro-chemicals before the membrane has to filter them out. UV is good enough to sterilize the water.

Ozone will also "get" those chemicals that may be present in the parts per billion or parts per trillion. The membrane "should" filter them all out in theory... but of course you can't find, identify, and test every single man made chemical out there. The ones to worry about are chemicals that mimic hormones in the body; these can have strong biological effects in the parts per billion.

Of course, a paranoid individual can always ozonate the water prior to drinking it instead of putting a venturi mixing system inline. That's an affordable option.

There is an amazing technology called PEM, where ozone is created directly in the water (pre-dissolved as much as physically possible). It is also a membrane technology. I have not seen this available or used in the United States.... I can't even find one to play with myself. Using in-line PEM ozone technology would be the ideal solution, even better than a venturi system. I only mention it to be thorough! Smile
