Dietary Ideology: Food as Medicine
« on: February 21, 2019, 07:55:00 PM »
I never learned to cook growing up.  Seldom did I even think about food preparation.  Doing the dishes I had down pat. :)

I learned herbology long before I learned how to cook.

In the Eytons' Earth Nutrition and Detoxification Independent Study Program, three different dietary practices are taught.  And with well intentioned irony, all three contradict each other.

When studying things like alternative and natural health, it is good to keep in mind that an "expert" can both be right and wrong.  At the same time.

Raymond Dextreit (author of "Our Earth, Our Cure.... see the download/files board) used a macrobiotic diet.  Like most diets, a macrobiotic diet will not be right for everyone.

Dextreit's work on nutrition was included because of his perspective and attitude towards food as medicine.  His seven irreplaceable healing foods idea is brilliant.

Over the years, I have learned how to include each one of them, every single day (almost!).

I cook and prepare food more like an  herbalist then a cook/chef... I've heard questions from observers such as, "You are using how many lemons in that?" Or, "How many CONTAINERS of Rosemary are in this?"  While I of course love it (or I wouldn't do it), most chefs would agree that the way I cook is often over-powering...  everything louder than everything else!  Lacking nuance and frankly lacking any real flavor profile.  But LOTS of flavor!

Luckily, the nutritional study program is not designed that way. We leave food preparation recipes up to the individual.  All that you have to do is measure out ingredients, and find a way to get them down the hatch!  It can be a very simple endeavour, or deeply involved.

It is worth mentioning, however, that key to the program of using detox foods as medicine, every single day I do include 2-4 ounces of high quality lemon juice, one cup of raw organic carrots, 1/2 to one full "knob" of organic garlic, 1/8 to 1/4 tsp of organic antioxidant spices minimum (like thyme), a serving of organic kimchi (cabbage), 1-4 tablespoonfuls of raw first cold press organic olive oil, up to one "vial" of nine times purple roasted bamboo salt... and one clay drink!

Thank you Raymond Dextreit, for changing the way I think about food, for helping to transfer my knowledge of herbology over to food consumption!  And also, for providing just the right perspective on what it means to let food be thine medicine!

Since you have mentioned Macrobiotics in regards toRaymond Deixter's book, I want to mention that in my earlier post in "How do you eat", I described how and what I and my wife eat, which is very similar to macrobiotics. A lot of avocado, buckwheat, quinoa, white rice, beetroot, carrots, parsley, dill, eggplant, zucchini, coconut oil, ghee, Ethiopian tahini, marmite, spelt bread(organic, as well as all veggies are). All steamed, and some cooked.
About 12 years ago we stayed in South Miami during winter months, for art festivals were doing at that time. The owner of the house where we rented a room, cured himself of prostate cancer following Macrobiotic diet. He even travelled to NYC to meet Michio Kushi.

I may re-examine macrobiotics for myself sometime in the future.  I've never been able to eat that way, haven't been able to shift the microbiome that way, don't have the enzymes needed, and can't seem to get the right microbes in place.

Things like zucchini and quinoa and broccoli are key, and they my digestive system down almost immediately.

I was chronically under-weight until I balanced out my microbiome, switched to a ketogenic diet, and upped my fat intake...  I don't tolerate ghee enough to be able to use it like I used to use grass fed butter.  Luckily, I found that the same thing could be done with coconut oil/real coconut milk/ ketones, medium chained fatty acids.

My life includes massive amounts of both physical and mental energy exposure, have to keep the engines running! :)

Getting this post back on topic a bit, let me share some guidance from the Weston A. Price Foundation, as everyone here is probably very familiar with Dr. Price's work, and it remains the very best general guidance. I formatted my own convenient 'one page' guides over the years, so you can download that and some other free materials from the link below. Note too that if you browse around a bit you'll see an 84 page guide from WAPF:
